[2021-2022, World] Stories of non-human animal resistance #2
First collection of stories can be found here.
One goal for this new year is to take a closer look at what we might call non-human animal resistance. With stories collected and reproduced from mainstream media, here’s an attempt at reporting on some acts of resistance against zoo, slaughterhouse, circus and other institutions of speciesism.
In 2021:
January 25: 5 wolves escaped from the zoo of Cases-de-Pène, France. One of the wolves was reportedly “having issues of being aggressive towards human”. Upon the wolves arrival in the zoo from Latvia, the wolf in question attacked the humans and allowed the rest of the wolves to escape. Two of the wolves, the “aggressive” one in question were murdered while two others were brought back in the zoo (which had to delay its opening by a month). The last wolf was never found again, though its presence was detected one year later, it hasn’t been caught again (as of January 22 of 2022).
April 8: A pig jumped off a trailer without anyone noticing on the way to a slaughterhouse in Langtree, United Kingdom. He was later found in a field near the smallholder’s town, where they decided they would bring him home and keep him instead of trying to bring him to the slaughterhouse. The pig still tried to escape a second time on his way back to the farm.
May: A wolverine escaped a zoo during a transfer to another park in Sotenäs , Sweden. She escaped traps, dogs and drones for six months before being seen again by humans. A court decision thwarted plans by the zoo to hunt her, and she seemed to have passed the winter despite what zoologist expected, moving on to living in a larger area in the wild.
June 24 : A bear escaped from a zoo in Port-Saint-Père, France. He was unfortunately caught back after chilling for a bit in the neighboring garden, and brought back inside the zoo.
June : A cobra escaped from “his” “owner” in Raleigh, United States. The cobra was captured a few hours later.
August 6: A baby bull escaped from a slaughterhouse in Feurs, France. He was caught a few hours later but spared for two reasons: firefighters found him instead of the usual cops, and the anesthetic they used “renders the meat impossible to consume for 35 days”. During that time, animalists mobilized, launched a fundraiser to “buy” the bull’s life from the slaughterhouse and got him a place in a sanctuary.
September 7: A rhino escaped from an enclosure by walking through a door that had not been “properly” locked in a zoo in Omaha, United States. Zookeepers used motor vehicles to barricade the rhino inside one part of the zoo, then “used apples and other tactics to “entice” the animal back into its proper enclosure.”, which he did after about 50 minutes.
September 11: Pigs escaped from a slaughterhouse truck and brought all traffic on a motorway to a standstill for almost an hour, between Warrington and Salford, United Kingdom. They were unfortunately caught back and returned to a field.
October 13-14: Over two days, two bulls and one calf escaped from a slaughterhouse in Besançon, France. The calf jumped over a 3 meter high fence, then destroyed another fence, before escaping on railways, where he was pursued by cops, farmers, train employees and hunters then murdered by one of the latter. Two bulls escaped the next day by destroying a door and quickly went into the forest, one of them was murdered by hunters later that day, the other was murdered the same way a few days later despite locals mobilizing to have him spared and hosted in a sanctuary.
October 15: After someone cut a hole in the fence, a wolf escaped her enclosure at a wildlife park in Royston, United Kingdom. She was caught two hours later, not far from the park.
In 2022:
January 5: A wallaby escaped from his enclosure at a petting zoo in Thurlby, United Kingdom, and has been said to “be having too much fun to be caught”. He was captured 10 days after his escape, but successfully escaped again 2 days later. He then escaped numerous attempts to catch him, though he was sighted many times, visited feeding stations and was caught in a trap that he escaped again, kicking out of a cage. He was finally caught on January 23 after three weeks on the lose. Days after he was brought back at the petting zoo, his brother also escaped their enclosure on January 29. The second wallaby was caught back two weeks later on February 13 in a trap set up by staff and a neighbor.
January 14: A pig took advantage of an opening in a farmer’s trailer to jump off it and escape on the road in Mukachevo, Ukraine, while being cheered by drivers of another car. The pig then disappeared, though it is unclear if the farmer caught it back.
January 21: Four monkeys escaped from a lab truck after a crash in Danville, United States. Three of them were caught back by next morning, and the last one on the next night.
February 8: A pig escaped his allotment, but was caught back after being found in a pub trying to get strokes & food, in Peterlee, United Kingdom.
February 27: Human accomplices got into a zoo and vandalized an enclosure, which allowed two wallabies to escape, in Plaisance-du-Touch, France. Both were caught back two days later.
March 12: A camel escaped from a petting zoo in Obion, United States. He was murdered by cops after attacking 2 men trying to capture him and then attacking the cops’ car.
March 13: A bull escaped from a cattle dealer by destroying a fence in Yssingeaux, France. He was later murdered by common agreement of the cops, a veterinary and the farmer after they weren’t able to contain him again.
March 18: A red panda escaped from a zoo after a tree fell on the enclosure in Helensburgh, Australia. She unfortunately died after being hit by a car on the motorway.
March 22: A horse escaped from a stable in Bukit Timah, Singapore, but was caught “minutes” after escaping.
March 24: A llama escaped its enclosure at a petting zoo through a hole in the fence in Surrey, Canada. It was caught back later that day by cops, who unfortunately didn’t get spit on.
