[Poland, December 2021] “Insurrection Lesson 1, or why we destroyed an ATM and a ticket machine”

Statement written by the group that led the attack in Wrocław:

On ACAB day (13.12) we decided to kill the cops in our heads and shatter the illusion of order and peace spread by the authorities.

So we smashed up an ATM and a ticket machine*. The displays were smashed and the rest was sealed with mounting foam.

We destroyed these things not to protest or make demands, but because it was relatively easy and not very risky. We want to learn how to attack this fucked up world so that we can fuck it up even more in the future.

And we are surrounded by a whole lot of potential targets – hundreds of displays to destroy, thousands of cameras to break or a hell of a lot of windows to smash. We are surrounded by opportunities to fight and learn. We can take the whole world around us as a target, because it is built to control and dominate us. Power today does not sit in parliament or in corporate board meetings – power is all around us. Power is cameras, ATMs, police stations and telecommunications masts.

This means that its influence is both stronger and less perceptible at the same time. But it also means that it is easier to hit it, because wherever we are, it is within reach – or within the reach of a hammer. Wherever we strike, Power will feel it.

Although our action is fairly minor (at least in terms of the scale of destruction and the targets chosen), such experiences are invaluable and turn reality upside down. From now on we look at it not as citizens but as partisans¹, and this is just the beginning.

What we have done is an expression of solidarity and a signal to all those who are also struggling against this world. It is a spark that can start a fire. It is also a message to all those who, like us, want to destroy what destroys and controls them. Take in hand what you can and experiment with the possibilities that surround us all.

Insurrection is always only a step away.

The most important thing is to start.

Find each other and have fun.

* The destruction of the ticket machine is in no way linked to the “campaign” (still?) run by the local FA, Free Public Transport. It’s a reformist project with nothing to do with anarchy and struggle. And we are stowaways anyway.

¹ Translation note: partisans here refers to guerillas, but can also be a callback to the use of the terms for polish resistance fighters in world war II. Polish partisans fought Nazi Germans (against which they launched massive sabotage campaigns), Ukrainian nationalists, Lithuanian Nazis collaborators, or even Soviet partisans in some places.
